I gave up coffee a few years ago but have been hooked on black tea ever since. Now I am trying to move on to avoiding caffeine completely, so I got some inspiration from Nourishing Traditions¬†and came up with a recipe for a tasty morning drink. This drink isn’t exactly low in carbohydrate or calories but its caffeine free, nutritious, and I found it very satisfying to have in the morning. This is also a great recipe if you are pregnant or breastfeeding because it is caffeine free and molasses gives you a good boost of iron, magnesium, and potassium.




  • 1 tea bag chamomile tea or other herbal tea
  • 1 cup boiled water
  • 2-3 tsp organic blackstrap molasses
  • 1-2 tsp raw honey
  • 1/4 cup full fat coconut milk (or dairy cream)
  • 1 tsp coconut oil

Boil water and fill a mug (with tea bag in it) 3/4 full. Let steep for at least 5 minutes. You can use other types of herbal tea but the molasses will completely cover the taste so you might want to use herbal teas you don’t really enjoy on their own; dandelion root would be a good one. After it has steeped remove and discard (compost?) tea bag and mix in desired amount of molasses and honey. If you have never tried this before you might want to start with 2 tsp and then increase if you want it to be stronger. Once the molasses and honey are completely dissolved add your coconut milk and oil. Stir until thoroughly mixed and enjoy with your breakfast.
